Rosalind Hodgkins
After graduating from Pratt Institute in the early 60′s, I stayed on in NYC and developed my painting for the next 40 years. I worked primarily abstractly in oil with a strong interest in color and the materiality of paint on the canvas. Spatial relationships are the formal structures of my compositions. The painterly surface is formed by an intuitive experience of the imagery I compose with. The expression in these paintings is a fictional investigation, an adventure into the possibilities of juxtaposition and perspective. Personal attraction to certain kinds of images leads me to develop these particular compositions.
When I first came to this area about 10 years ago as a weekend visitor, I was greatly influenced by botanical nature and the landscape which influenced me to begin “Plein Air” painting in watercolor, from then on I explored plants, birds and insects. Working in watercolor allowed me to develop a fine skill in representing the reality of an image which is now influencing the new oil paintings I began last year. In these new oil paintings I use the layered brushwork as in the earlier geometric abstractions, but now to these images is added an emotional, atmospheric realism that the luminosity of oil paint affords.
