Richard Weber

Throughout my life, I have always been involved in making art.  I have shown and sold my work locally.  I now lead a quiet life with my wife of 25 years, Debra, daughter Natalia, 19, and son Jacob, 15.  We share our home with two dogs, three cats, two turtles, two goldfish and a parakeet.  My studio is in an old renovated barn behind our old renovated house, most of the renovation done by myself.

My fascination with spheres began at a very early age.  When I was eight years old I was asked, “What would you like for your birthday”.  My reply was, “All different sized balls.”  I wanted to make something different.  The 1960’s brought the space race and expanded interest in science and math.  I was very good at both but was particularly interested in chemistry, the structure of atoms and molecules, and astronomy: planets, stars, galaxies etc.  I began college wanting to major in biology, but I hated being in the lab because of the awful smell.  Early on I switched to art and have not stopped since.

The surface of a smoothed clay sphere has a certain serene quality.  The work I am now exploring has to do with carving through the surface skin and creating complex rhythms and patterns that enliven and enhance the surface.  I consider each carved sphere to be an independent sculpture.  I avoid repeating identical motifs by exploring variations of patterns, textures and themes.  Most of the spheres contain a few beads that rattle about, enhancing the experience of handling the sculptures.  These spheres were created with the idea of interaction.  They cannot be fully experienced until they are picked up and explored simultaneously, in a visual, tactile, and auditory fashion.  I hope my work brings you many years of joy.

Prices range from $100-$250.  For more information on Rick Weber visit his website at  www.rweberart.com
